Title : Temples and Legends of Himachal Pradesh
Author : P. C. Roy Chowdhury
Pages : 200
Availability: Currently out of stock.

About the book:

There are as many Gods and as many temples in Himachal Pradesh as there are villages and more. There is a devta for every village, a kuldevta for every principal man. And at every dangerous curve of the mountain or at the foot of a hill, there is a shrine for Gods and Goddesses. The people here are very God fearing and believe in spirits and other things and hence there are many folk stories and many legends in these areas which have been compiled in this book.
There are many Gods and Goddesses made of various material and some are swayambhus i.e came out by themselves. Every deity has a different form of worship and many worshippers have to take their own priests when they go to the temples. The priests need not necessarily be Brahmins, unlike in other parts of the country. The main Gods worshipped here are Durga or Devi, Vishnu or Krishna and Siva. Some Gods are appeased by chhang or home brewn intoxicating drink, while others are offered water or even hookah!
