The bhakti movement in Maharashtra was very strong in the thirteenth to the seventeenth century. This book is on the saints of that period. The lives, the stories and the bhajans of Sant Dnyaneshwar, Namdev, Eknath, Tukaram and Samarth Ramdas have been given and at the end of the book is the famous pasaydaan sung towards the end of any programme. This is a famous prayer by Sant Dnyaneshwar for universal welfare. The saints of Maharashtra during the Bhakti movement were mostly from the lower castes. Nivrutti, Dnyandev, Sopan and Muktabai, however, came from a Brahmin family and were born after their father who had turned a sanyasi came back to family life. But the other saints were not Brahmins yet they rose to sainthood through pure bhakti, through bhajans, their devotional songs which are sung even today. In Maharashtra these saints are revered and honoured, dindis (processions on foot) are taken on Ekadashi days to Alandi, Pandharpur and other places where these saints lived, preached and died.
