Hero and freedom fighter Surendranath Dwivedy was an Orissa born patriot who lived and died for the country. He deserves a pride of place among the freedom fighters of India. He was the founder member of Utkal Congress Samyavadi Karmi Sangh who vowed to fight against social abuses rising from casteism and untouchability. He was inclined towards socialism for changing the social and political setup of India during the British rule. He organized a powerful kisan movement in Orissa when he saw the plight of the tillers under the zamindari system. He pioneered the Quit India movement in Orissa and was the editor of a journal called 'Krushak' in which he wrote fiery bulletins stirring the youngsters. He was a successful political leader, a parliamentarian, a trade unionist, a writer, a peasant leader.
Surendranath Dwivedy's story has been told through the words of eminent people like Prem Bhasin, Madhu Dandavate, Pradip Bose, Balaram Mohanty, Madhu Limaye and several others. His is a story of fiery political and socialist activities during the turbulent British raj of the last century till the freedom and long after. Surendranth Dwivedy not only espoused the cause of the tillers of the soil but fought against corruption through action, words and inspiring articles. He was away on an important political mission when his wife died. He had put the country before his family. The essays on him written in this book are from personal experience and contact by the writers with this relentless crusader.
