This Institute, started in 1939, is now one of the leading and reputed post-graduate and research institutes in Maharashtra, both on the basis of the number of research scholars attached to the department and research works published by it. The Institute is recognized by the University of Mumbai for courses of studies for Sanskrit and Ancient Indian Culture for M.A. and Ph.D degrees.
Scholarships, freeships and prizes amounting to Rs. 6,000/- are awarded to the students of the Institute.
The two journals 'Bharatiya Vidya' Indological Research Journal and 'Samvid' Sanskrit Quarterly are published by this Institute.
