Upanishadic Project Department

The Upanishadic Project Department was started in 1977 for the purpose of presenting to the public critical editions of the Principal Upanishads, namely, the Isha, Kena, Katha, Prashna, Taittiriya, Aitareya, Mundaka, Mandukya, Chhandogya and Brihadaranyaka with a general introduction followed by introduction to each one of the Upanishads, the text in Devanagari and Roman script, translation of the texts and commentaries of the General Editor, the late Dr. P.B. Gajendragadkar. Each volume was to present also the English translation of the 'Bhashyas' of Sankara, Ramanuja, Madhva and Vallabha followed by a critical appraisal of the 'Bhashyas', a glossary, bibliography and index.
Dr. P.B. Gajendragadkar had completed the volume containing Isha and Kena Upanishads which was published in 1981.
Mahamahopadhyaya Prof. J.H. Dave, Hon. Director of the Bhavan, has edited three Atharvana panishads - Prashna, Mundaka and Mandukya, with the translation of Shankara-Bhashya, followed by elaborate notes based on sub-commentators like Anandagiri and Shankarananda for Shankara, Shri Jayatirtha and others for Madhva and Rangaramanuja, Kuranarayana, for Ramanuja.
The Prashna and the Mundaka Upanishads were published in 1989. Mandukya Upanishad with the Karikas of Gaudapada and with Commentary of Shankaracharya was published in 1990. The project is financed by the Mumbadevi Temple Trust, Mumbai.
