What Ramayana means to me

The True Support

I am told when I lost my mother at the age of about two and a half years, I kept singing “Raghupati Raghava Rajaram Patita Pawan Sitaram”.
Later when my sister started learning music, the songs of Tyagaraja used to be on my lips too.
Irrespective of whether there was indeed a person by the name Rama or not, Ramayana is the heritage of India and Rama has been a great role model for Indians through the centuries.
Kabir says, “The residents of all the three worlds describe Rama as the son of Dasharatha, but the true meaning of Rama is different from this.”
Why, even the last Shabad said by Guru Tegh Bahadur before he was beheaded refers to Rama : “All my friends have deserted me. None of the relationships are sustained in this hour of crisis except Rama – the true support.”
