My vision of a free India is a land which is free from not only the oppressive colonizing hands of the British, but a nation which is also free from the binding shackles of violence, prejudice, hatred, and greed.
We have won our freedom from the British, but are we truly a free nation? Freedom is not a license to brutal, unhampered violence and merciless vengeance. Freedom is not a license to indulgence. Freedom is not a license to indiscriminate hoarding, bribery and tax evasion.
The freedom is freedom FROM violence, it is freedom FROM hatred, it is freedom FROM greed, it is freedom FROM desire and impurity. True freedom is not freedom to indulge oneself, uninhibited, in all of these vices.
Just as Gandhiji convinced the people of India that “enough is enough” to the tyranny of the British, let us convince ourselves that “enough is enough” to the tyranny of violence, dishonesty and avarice.
Mother India’s place in the world should be one of a great leader, a moral guide, a torchbearer of peace, piety devotion and Dharma Indian culture is a treasure chest of wisdom, insight and universal truths which can cure the afflictions of war, violence and despair plaguing the world today. However, as the adage says, “Physician, heal thyself”. Before we can help and lead others, we must help and heal ourselves.
My vision for the future of India is that we use the wisdom of our divine culture to lead the world toward peace, harmony and equality. However, in order to claim our rightful place as a world leader, we must not only chant the mantras of peace, love, universal brotherhood, selflessness, honesty and piety in our mandirs, but we must actually live these mantras and ideals in our lives. Then, and only then will we truly be a free nation.
