During the freedom struggle led by Gandhiji, free India was indeed just a ‘vision’.
However, it is now over half a century since we became Independent and what is needed is no longer simply a vision but a concrete movement forwards in every sphere of national activity.
This includes poverty elimination, universal primary education, vastly improved health care delivery services, continued progress in agriculture and industry, full employment, a strong balance of trade position and enough defence force to ensure our sovereignty and territorial integrity.
While substantial progress has been made on several fronts, the original vision is still far from realisation.
Our rich tradition of communal harmony has been gravely compromised by recent developments; unemployment remains wide-spread, and we are still nowhere near achieving universal literacy. Our birthrate remains unacceptably high as is the infant mortality.
India today, therefore, presents a mixed picture. However, what is necessary is a renewal of faith in the destiny of India among our population in general, particularly the younger generations.
Our youth have shown tremendous talent and, given the opportunity, can build a more prosperous India within the next 20 years.
