WHY AN ACADEMY FOR ACTING & DIRECTION?

" I hold the world but as the world, Gratiano, a stage where every man must play a part"

Acting and living have much in common. Life frequently casts us into different roles: some pleasant, some unpleasant. At different times we are different persons: a stern parent, a loving wife or a husband, a naughty boy or an angry sister. We are always choosing our roles according to circumstances. When the role pleases us we are relaxed but when the role fails we are upset or uneasy, we become tense & uncomfortable. This causes a breakdown in communication. This breakdown is because of lack of self-awareness and self-awareness is the cornerstone of the Art and Craft of Acting.

We communicate daily with others but sometimes communication is not imaginative e.g. A baby's scream. On the other hand a rock group's screaming may be imaginative but they are seldom relate significant experience. Therefore, If an actor is to succeed, the form of his work must be imaginative and its content significant. To achieve this the actor must have mastered the tools and understood the techniques involved in the journey from INNER PERSONEL EXPERIENCE, through its externalization into Dramatic self expression, to its organization into Group Communication and an act of Theatre. The tools are breathing, body movement, facial expressions & explanatory gesture, voice and speech, senses, imagination, memory, emotion & spirit. Once these tools & techniques are understood and mastered, and he must learn to use them sensitively tuned to concert pitch.

Most of our actions are directed by a combination of memory and imagination. A well-trained actor uses them with knowledge and awareness to communicate with an audience.

In all personal and social relationships there is a certain intensity of emotions. An Actor must learn to harness, express, communicate or disguise these emotions, and their intensities as & when required.

The theatre today is in a state of change and the rate of change is increasing. This change can be seen in new styles of acting and production, new forms of writing and presentation. Theatre is no more traditional and there is no more mutually exclusive professional & non-professional theatre. There are now no separate art forms like song, dance, and drama, TV & CINEMA. Now there is mixing, mingling & interchange. An actor is called upon to act in theatre today, in TV tomorrow and film day after. Though acting remains basically common, mediums are different. An actor must learn to switch off one and switch on another at a moment's notice.

And therefore it has become all the more necessary to train actors and directors to cope up with these changed and flexible requirements of show business.
