Mahamahopadhyaya Professor J.H.Dave Saheb
passes away

I am grieved to report to you that Mahamahopadhyaya Prof. Jyantkrishna H. Dave, one of Bhavan's founders and closest associates of Munshiji, and the Chief of all the Sanskrit institutions and activities of the Bhavan for the past 70 years, passed away in the early hours of the morning of today, the 9th January, 2008. He was 99.
A gigantic scholar, an authority on Dharmashastras and Hindu Law, Editor of all the Sanskrit and research journals of Bhavan, author of 42 books, Member of the Sanskrit Commission, Government of India, Hon. Secretary of the Sanskrit Vishwa Parishad and recipient of several top awards including one from UNESCO, Dave saheb was a Maharishi who gave away his everything in the service of Indian Culture in general and Bhartiya Vidya Bhavan in particular. When Bhavan passed through a short-lived difficult period of time recently, he stood by the Bhavan like the rock of the Gibraltar.
Dave Saheb's commitment to Bhavan was so total that after the demise of his wife Tarulatabehn, he refused to settle down in USA with his son and daughter, in order to continue to serve the Bhavan till the end.
Though he was 99 and had a peaceful death, we are stunned at the very thought of the Bhavan without Dave saheb. The blessings of the Maharishi will always be with us.

(H.N.Dastur)
Executive Secretary
