Shri S. M. Parekh passes away

Principal Emeritus, Director of Education, Head of Shikshan Bharati and Member of the Executive Council and the Bhishma PitaMaha of Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan, Shri Shashikant Motilal Parekh, passed away in Mumbai on Monday, 26th May, 2008 after a brief illness. He was 87.
Born on 26th August, 1921, Professor S.M. Parekh joined Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan in 1946 as a Lecturer of Chemistry in Bhavan’s College at its Complex at Andheri. He served the College as its Vice-Principal from 1958 till 1965. He was appointed as Principal by Dr. K. M. Munshi, Founder of Bhavan, to head its Bhavan’s College at Chowpatty.
On his retirement in 1986, he was elevated as Principal Emeritus and he immediately joined Central Bhavan as Joint Director.
He assumed charge as Director of Education and Head of Shikshan Bharati, which guides and controls all the educational institutions of Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan throughout India. He was also the Chief of Bhavan’s Rajendra Prasad Institute of Communication and Management which runs 53 centres throughout India.
When the Government of Maharashtra offered him the Vice-Chancellorship of the University of Mumbai, he politely declined, stating that he wished to continue to serve the Bhavan.
All the institutions of Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan remained closed on May 26, 2008 as a mark of respect to one of the pillars of Bhavan and an eminent educationist of the Bhavan.
