Relief Camp at Bhavan's Elamakkara
The heavy rains and floods that ravaged the state of Kerala had a devastating effect on lakhs of people. The one thing worthy of mention was the strength, unity, commitment and readiness shown by youngsters to join in the relief operations. Many went out of their way to lend a helping hand and volunteer their services at relief camps.
Bhavan's Vidya Mandir, Elamakkara opened its classrooms, auditorium and canteen to the displaced families from nearby areas on August 16, 2018. The evening of the first day of the camp saw the registration of over 200 residents who had been displaced due to the incessant rains and threats of inundation.
In a noble gesture, the Interact Club of the school in association with the Alumni, PTA and the Rotary Club of Cochin East joined hands to launch the relief material collection drive in the school premises on August 17, 2018. The school collected rice, sugar, tea, wheat flour, rava, pulses, cooking oil and other provisions. Tooth brushes and other toiletries comprising soap and sanitary napkins, over 300 mats and other bedding materials, and clothes for children, men and women, were also collected. Medicines, baby food, baby feeding bottles and diapers were donated by generous parents.
In an effort to keep the campus clean and free from plastic, the drive received an overwhelming support from the parents who donated steel utensils including plates and tumblers that were used by residents in the camp.
By August 21 nearly 700 people had registered in the camp at school. The school canteen was let out on all five days to cook food for the residents. Other organisations, like the Rotary, and private individuals too provided meals for the residents at the camp.
A special medical team comprising doctors who were parents and the alumni of the school was formed to ensure round the clock service to residents of the camp.
The students, the PTA and the alumni have been pro-active in mobilising relief material. Generous donations in cash too have been pouring in since the school had sent out a call for help.
As a backup to the school campaign initiated by Mathrubhumi-Nanma, a collection drive for school kits, comprising school bags, books and stationery have been undertaken by the students and teachers of the school.
The school hopes this culture of compassion continues to grow and leaders emerge to creatively work towards a more hopeful future.
