Coimbatore Kendra
24th Pongal Music Festival
Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan's Coimbatore Kendra offered its 24th Pongal Music Festival as a tribute to the memory of Gana Saraswathy Smt. D.K.Pattammal, on her birth centenary.
On the inaugural day, Dr. (Smt.) Premeela Gurumurthy, the current Vice-Chancellor of Tamil Nadu Music and Fine Arts University, was conferred the title 'Sangeeth Samrat' by the Chairman of the Kendra, Shri B.K.Krishnaraj Vanavarayar. A well-known musicologist, a skillful musician, a passionate teacher, a successful exponent of Harikatha and an able administrator, she richly deserves the title. Shri S.V.Subramaniam, a well-known percussionist and organ player and a kind-hearted teacher who reaches out to autistic children by teaching them music, was honoured with 'Kovai Subri Muruga Gana Award'.
The evening's programme started with devotional and patriotic songs by the students' choir from Ajjanur School. Following the Awards Function, Smt.Nithyasree Mahadevan, Smt. Pattammal's grand daughter and a popular vocalist on her own merit gave a vocal concert, including many of the songs popularized by her grandmother. On the second day, Kumari. Sahana Samraj won the hearts of the rasikas with her pleasant pliable voice, judicious song selection and pleasing stage presence. Dr. B.Vijayagopal on the flute and Chitravina Shri P.Ganesh gave an enjoyable jugalbandhi comprising lively numbers on the third day. On the fourth day, Shri Ramakrishnan Murthy's impressive concert proved to be a proof of his incredible hard work. Prince Rama Varma's concert on the final day was the jewel in the crown. With his pleasant smile, interesting anecdotes, sense of humour and excellent presentation, he struck an immediate rapport with the audience, who rushed to the stage to express their happiness soon after the concert concluded. These artistes were accompanied by talented violinists and percussionists.
On 13th January, Sadguru Sri Thyagaraja Aradhana was held at the pandal in the forenoon. Most of the musicians, music teachers, students and rasikas participated and sang the pancharatna krithis of Saint Thyagaraja.
On all the days, up and coming artistes showcased their talents during the earlier slots. Smt. Charanya Mani Aditya, Selvan. Navaneetha Krishnan and Selvan Arjun Ashok presented vocal concerts while Smt.Menakadevi Gangadaran's students presented a group Veena recital.
It was a well-conducted and well-attended function.
