Tribute to Mandolin U. Srinivas
U. Rajesh in concert
In March, The Bhavan Vani Fine Arts and Taruvai Charitable Trust organised a series of three programmes at The Bhavan in London as tribute to Mandolin U. Srinivas who died at the age of 45 in 2014. Uppalapu Srinivas was a virtuoso mandolin maestro and composer who pioneered the introduction of the mandolin, a western instrument, into classical Karnatic music. He enjoyed a global reach and worldwide audience and was awarded the Padmashri in 1998 by the Government of India, and the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in 2009.
On March 7 the Akkarai Sisters gave a Carnatic violin and vocal performance, accompanied on mridangam by The Bhavan's teacher Shri M. Balachandar and on ghatam by
Shri Pirashanna Thevarajah.
On March 8 Carnatic vocalist Shri Sanjay Subramanyan, accompanied on violin by Shri S. Varadarajan, delighted students of Smt. Sivasakti Sivanesan by songs such as Brindavanam Iduvo and Gambhiravani Tillana which they learnt during their summer school.
The series culminated in a mandolin performance on March 29, by the younger brother of Srinivas, Shri U Rajesh. He performed pieces that Srinivas had popularised like Endu Muddo in ragam Bindumalini and Sai Bhajan in Vakulabharanam and made Lotus Flower, composed by guitar legend John McLaughlin whose band Remembering Shakti Srinivas was a member. John McLaughlin gave a heartfelt tribute recollecting cherished memories of their time together, and a short impromptu demonstration of his ability on the veena. Srinivas's parents attended the tribute.
