Independence Day celebration
Shri Virendra Sharma, MP, HE Shri Navtej Sarna, High Commissioner of India, Shri Joginder Sanger
HE Shri Navtej Sarna, High Commissioner of India, celebrated India's Independence Day at the Bhavan on August 3. Speaking here for the first time, he thanked the Bhavan for the values of inclusivity, simplicity and truth that it has nurtured. He said that the 'huge Indian diaspora in UK' is 'a shining example and has become a critical bridge between India and the UK'.
An array of distinguished people spoke following a welcome by Shri Joginder Sanger. Mayor Cllr Mercy Umeh said that she was proud that the largest centre for Indian arts and culture outside India is in Hammersmith and Fulham. The Hon. Sir Mota Singh QC said that India is now the second largest economy in the world and he hopes that the nation will continue to prosper. Shri Virendra Sharma, MP, highlighted that Independence Day celebrations demonstrate the current relationship between India and the UK which we wish to strengthen. The Rt. Hon. Keith Vaz, MP, advocated that we should view Brexit not just as an ending but as the beginning of our renewal with the commonwealth, and to look to India as a main trading partner. Shri Barry Gardiner, MP, said that we have an opportunity to forge a new relationship with India and that there will be obstacles but these will be nothing like those which people faced in 1947.
Dr. Marr proposed a vote of thanks. The evening concluded with a short cultural programme.
