The first part in the three part cultural Festival to celebrate the 'Twin Celebrations' was inaugurated by Shri Bharat Joshi, British Deputy High Commissioner, Chennai on November 22.
Shri L. Sabaretnam, Chairman of the Kendra presided over the function while Shri S.S. Rajsekhar, Chairman of the Kala Kendra welcomed the gathering. Shri P. N. Santhanagopal, Director of Bhavan's Head Office was the Special Invitee.
Shri Rajshekar said that Bhavan's Chennai Kendra conducts round the year cultural programmes and is the foremost cultural organisation in Chennai. The first part of the Cultural Festival had 47 music concerts by leading and up and coming artistes.
The second part held from December 14 to 25 had 34 events inaugurated by Chief Justice of India Shri P. Sathasivam.
47 concerts are held between December 26 and January 12. The Mylapur Auditorium was spruced up for the occasion.
Shri P. N. Santhanagopal paid rich tributes to Bhavan's founder Kulapati Munshi and congratulated the Chennai kendra for their efforts.
Shri L. S. Sabretnam detailed the activites of the kendra and said that the kendra has very cordial relations with the British Government and the London Centre.
And this will become better under the leadership of Shri Bharat Joshi.
The Bhavan's Awards for Lifetime Achievements carrying a purse of One Lakh, a Medallion, a shawl and a citation were bestowed on Carnatic vocalists Smt. Ranjani and Smt Gayatri, on Mridangam Maestro Thiruvaarur Bhakthavatsalam by Smt Bhakthi Joshi and Sri. Bharat Joshi.
This annual award is instituted by the Reddy couple in memory of P.Obul Reddy and P. Gnanabal.
Shri Bharat Joshi revealed that he is the first person of Indian origin to be appointed as an Ambassador of the United Kingdom.
Though he earlier lived like a White person, he began learning his mother tongue Gujarati and reading Indian epics. Now he is like a true Indian.
The awardees all made acceptance speeches. Shri K.N.Ramaswamy, Director, Bhavan's Chennai Kendra proposed the vote of thanks.
