Srutyartha Muktavali (Sanskrit)

When Carlo Rubbia stated that ninety per cent of the matter/energy in our universe is unknown and unknowable, even the best western minds found it difficult to swallow. Indians, however, were not embarrassed. Because we have been trained to look upon the Cosmos as a system of “the little known, the unknown vast”. The Vedic hymn, Purusha Sooktam, tells us that the space we live in is only a quarter (Paada) of the total space; while three quarters (tripaada) are in the immortal skies (amritam divi). For a discerning mind, modern times abound in such instances testifying the wisdom of the Vedas.Vedas form the very basis of Indian culture. They guide the mainstream of Indian life by infusing spiritual vigour into it; while they themselves serve as adaptable tools in the hands of social reformers like Dayananda and Aurobindo. Kerala, once the madhouse of untouchability was transformed to “God’s own country” by the relentless work of pioneers like Chattampi Swamikal and Sree Narayana Guru who were Vedic masters from the non-brahmin class. And from the Brahmin class an enlightened soul joined them –V. K.

About
K. Narayana Bhattathiri

Bhattathiri, a fiery soul in youth, was ostracised by the orthodox and he took it as a blessing to withdraw himself into seclusion and careful study of the Vedas. A master of Nirukta, he delved into the inner world of Vedic truth and Vedic wisdom. He wrote relentlessly on the relevance of Vedic messages in the modern context. Often he pointed out that “yajna” is far from the ceremony, as it is often understood; that it is social work of service as preached by Gandhiji. For him untouchability was sin; slavery was evil; freedom was dharma; just because they are presented thus in the sacred Vedas. He taught that woman has a place of esteem equal to that of man; that she has right not only for education, but even for holy ordination. In fact, he was writing out his own commentary of Sruti in his own way.
Bhattathiri’s writings have been collected into half a dozen volumes. In his own day he had not cared much to compile books. (A saintly spirit, he refused even to accept remuneration for his writings!) But his winged words went straight into the thinking hearts, and prepared them to brace themselves up for the modern age. Today they are more than history to us. They hold reliable keys to open to treasures of our Vedic past. Srutyartha muktavali contains selected essays from his pen, translated into Sanskrit. The selections are representative, and present the essential genius of the author. The rendering is faithful; but the reader would do well to remember that the original words were meant for the average Keralan of the twentieth century. Also, the occasional explanations in English given in brackets may be taken out of the body of the text, and carried to the bottom of the pages as footnotes, in the next edition.
