He composed Bani in simple language and travelled extensively in South Asia spreading his uplifting message of unity and goodwill amongst humanity. He succeeded in freeing the minds of the people, of ignorance, superstition, rituals and the fear of the tyrant Mogul rulers and fanatic religious heads.
He passed on his mantle— Gurgaddi – to his pupil who passed various stringent tests; bypassing his own sons and thus initiating a defined process of succession.
The second Guru, Shri Angad Dev Ji was a great social reformer. The third Guru, Shri Amardas Ji started the tradition of Langar where all visitors regardless of their worldly status, caste, creed and gender ate together before obtaining His Darshan.
Even Emperor Akbar had to first eat in the Langar sitting with the commoners before he was permitted to have Guru Saheb’s Darshan.
The fourth Guru, Shri Ramdas Ji built the Amrit Sarovar in the centre of which the fifth Guru Shri Arjan Dev Ji built Harmander Saheb popularly known as Golden Temple; which is the most sacred Gurudwara.
Guru Arjan Dev Ji compiled all the compositions of the preceding four Gurus, various Bhagats, Bhats and Gursikhs in Guru Granth Saheb. He was the first to suffer religious persecution at the hands of the Mogul rulers. He sacrificed his life to protect Dharma.
The political situation in the country continued to deteriorate and by the time Guru Shri Hargobind Ji took over the reins of the Panth he was compelled to raise the Sikh army to protect the people and his followers. He was a superb warrior and fortified his areas. He impressed upon Swami Samarth Ramdas the mentor of King Shivaji the need for a strong army to protect the Marathas.
The seventh Guru, Shri Har Kishan Ji was very gentle. He established a herbal dispensary from which medicines were provided even to Emperor Shah Jahan for treating Prince Dara Shikoh. Smt. Kusum Ghatage, born in a traditional Hindu Family in Maharashtra (Sangli), went to East-Africa – Tanganyika, now Tanzania, in 1944, with her late husband Dr. Ghatage Pandurang Srinivas of Kolhapur.
Since 1944 she spent 40 years in Arusha (Tanzania), a beautiful place at the foot of Mt. Meru.
In this small place different communities like Gujarathis, Punjabis, Sikhs, Bohras Ithanashrees lived like one large family with affection towards each other. There was warmth.
Now she is in Hyderabad, she often goes to Arusha. She finds the same warmth here in Hyderabad. She worked as a teacher in Indian Public (Secondary) Agakhan School too for some time. She has learnt many languages including the Punjabi Gurumukhi Script.
