The swadeshi spirit was instilled in all the freedom fighters of pre independence India. There were no sacrifices too big or too small for this struggle. Gandhiji defined swadeshi as 'that spirit in us which requires us to seve our immediate neighbours before us and to use things produced in our neighbourhood in preference to those more remote'.
Handspun and handwoven khadi was the buzzword along with the articles made by villagers with the spread of the swadeshi movement. Gandhiji said that to use foreign made goods throwing away local ones was wrong. Only those that could not be manufactured in India should be imported while stress on the usage of locally made goods was given. Swadeshi is not a cult of hatred nor does it disciminate between the east and the west. But it is a universal law based on the twin principal of love and humility.
