Bhavan's Bharatiya Sangeet & Nartan Shikshapeeth was established by Bhavan's Founder Kulapati Dr. K. M. Munshi with the help of India's foremost musicologist Acharya Dr. Srikrishna Narayan Ratanjankar in 1946.
The Founder's ideal was to establish a center where all Indian traditional classical performing arts would be taught and preserved as this was one of Bhavan's prime cultural objectives. Acharya Ratanjankar was one of the most respected academicians in the field of Hindustani classical music and also the Head of the Bhatkhande Sangeet Vidyapeeth, Lucknow.
The following music luminaries served as Principals of the Shikshapeeth: Pt. Chidanand Nagarkar (vocalist), Pt. Dinkar Kaikini (vocalist& composer) Smt. Shashikala Kaikini (vocalist), Pt. Dhruba Ghosh (sarangi player, vocalist and composer and a Grammy Award winner 2010). The present Principal is Smt. Meera Chikhalikar.
The Institution had grand masters as faculty members. Tabla Maestro Ustad Allah Rakha, Ustad Mohammed Khan (Rudra Veena Maestro), Pt. S. C. R. Bhatt. Dr. K. G. Ginde and other veterans uptil the 1960s.
The institution had built up a tradition of celebrating the Bhatkhande Sangeet Samaroh from decades and this has become one of the landmark events in the cultural life of Mumbai.
The Sangeet & Nartan Shikshapeeth has trained more than 5000 students in music and dance since inception. The Shikshapeeth is affiliated to the Bhatkhande Sangeet Vidyapeeth, Lucknow for its 5-year DEGREE COURSES on an all India level.
The Shikshapeeth mainly teaches Hindustani (North Indian) classical vocal, tabla, sitar, Kathak dance, Odissi dance, Hindi Sugam Sangeet and Children's Music Courses.
Bhavan conducts 1 year & 2 year CERTIFICATE COURSES in all subjects. For Dance Bhavan's conducts Certificate and Diploma Courses in Classical Dance viz Kathak and Odissi.
