Bhavan's Chennai Kendra which is in the midst of celebrating its Diamond Jubilee is conducting its Annual Festival from November 18, 2018 to January 15, 2019 with various cultural programmes covering music, discourses, dance, etc. The festival was inaugurated by Sri Banwarilal Purohit, Vice-President of Bhavan Worldwide and Governor of Tamil Nadu. Padmabhushan Dr. Sudha Ragunathan, renowned Carnatic Vocalist was the Guest of Honour. Dr.Nalli Kuppuswamy Chetti, Vice-Chairman of Chennai Kendra delivered the welcome address and spoke about the salient features of the festival. He said that the festival might perhaps be the biggest cultural event in this part of the country. Sri K. Parasaran, former Attorney General of India and Vice-Chairman of the Kendra presided over the function since Bhavan's Chennai Kendra Chairman Sri N. Ravi was abroad. Sri Parasaran in his presidential address praised the efforts of Thiru. Banwarilal Purohit in shaping the activities of the Chennai Kendra and also said that the Chennai Kendra of the Bhavan has ambitious plans to boost its activities both in cultural and educational fields through its Thiruporur Project, which in all probability should start shortly. The festival consists of 180 events with the participation of more than 1000 artists. Smt. Sudha Ragunathan spoke highly about Bhavan's Chennai operations. She said that the Bhavan has become a pioneer institution in conducting cultural programmes and also in maintaining a top class auditorium. The Bhavan has become the first choice for every artist and also the venue to start their annual music festival participation, she remarked.
Sri Banwarilal Purohit in his address detailed about the Bhavan's current activities and objectives and said that the Bhavan which had a humble beginning as an ideological institution in 1938 has now become a cultural movement. He applauded the Kendra's efforts to propagate Indian culture and values and presented the Bhavan's Legendary Awards to Padmavibhushan Dr. Umayalpuram K Sivaraman (mridangam vidwan), Padmabhushan Prof. T.N. Krishnan (violin vidwan) and Padmasri Dr. Vyjayantimala Bali (Bharatanatyam exponent) who was also an MP for two terms. He appreciated their contributions in their respective chosen field. He detailed about the structured carnatic music and of the Trinity-Thyagaraja, Muthuswamy, Dikshitar and Shyama Sastry. He also acknowledged the contributions of Papansam Sivan. The Bhavan's Legendary Awards has a cash component of Rs. 1 lakh, a medal, shawl and a memento.
