Homage to Prof. Dr. P. G. Shukla
Prof. Dr. Premshankar G. Shukla (87 years) passed away on 30-10-2019. He was born to Smt. Saraswati, and Shri Girijashankar K. Shukla, on 31-12-1932, at Halvad, Dist. Surendranagar, Gujarat. He joined the Bhavan's Mumbadevi Sanskrit Mahavidyalaya in 1944 for studying Sanskrit, and he passed Bhavan's Shastri (Vedanta) and Acharya (Sahitya) exams. in due course of time. Thereafter he also obtained Sahitya-ratna, Kavya-tirtha, Gita Visharada, M. A. (Sanskrit), Ph. D. (Sanskrit), M. A. (Hindi), and Ph. D. (Hindi) degrees of other universities. In 1951, he actively participated in the function of Prana-pratishtha Mahotsava at newly built Somanath Temple (at Veraval, Gujarat), organized by Dr. Rajendra Prasad, President of India; Kulapati Munshiji, and other national leaders. Prof. Dr. P.G. Shukla taught Sanskrit and Hindi at Sharadapeeth college, Dwarka (Gujarat) for some time, and he later on joined K.C. College (Mumbai) as lecturer (in Hindi) and retired in 1991. During this period, he remained actively associated with the Bhavan's Sanskrit activities conducted under direction and guidance of Mahamahopadhyaya Prof. J. H. Daveji, Hon. Director, Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan.
After his retirement (in 1991), he devoted himself completely to the propagation of Sanskrit and Indian culture at the Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan. For many years, he regularly taught the students for the Bhavan's Saral Sanskrit, Higher Sanskrit, and Gita Examinations, at very modest honorarium. He also motivated many Sanskritists and institutes for conducting Bhavan's Saral Sanskrit and Gita Exams. Later on, he also served as Deputy Exam. Secretary of the Bhavan's Sanskrit Exams. Dept., and as Shastra Chudamani Professor at Bhavan's Mumbadevi Adarsh Sanskrit Mahavidyalaya for some years.
He had delivered many talks and lectures on Sanskrit, Gita and our cultural heritage at various educational institutes in India and abroad. He authored around ten books on Vedic prayers, Mantras, Gita and other subjects. For his rich contribution to the field of Sanskrit studies, he was honoured with gold-medals by Kulapati Dr. K.M. Munshiji, Founder-President, Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan; Shri Shri Prakash, Governor of Maharashtra; Dr. Rajendra Prasad, President of India; and H.H. Shankaracharyas of Sharada Peeth and Shringeri Peeth, on different occasions.
Since last 28 years (from 1991 onwards), he had been teaching Sanskrit at the Bhavan with unique dedication and devotion. During this period, he zealously attended almost every programme / function organized by the Bhavan for promotion of Sanskrit and Indian culture, and often took part in many of them. His love and respect for the Bhavan and its Founder Kulapati Munshiji were really great and praiseworthy. Prof. Dr. Shukla was a thorough gentleman and very humble human being. He always used to greet everyone with smile and affection. He is survived by his wife Smt. Sharmishtha P. Shukla, and three (married) daughters - Smt. Nandini H. Raval, Smt. Arati M. Trivedi, and Smt. Kavita P. Vyas.
A condolence meeting was organized on 2-11-2019, at the Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan. Dr. Girish B. Jani, Addl. Director, Bhavan's P.G. & Research Dept., and Late Prof. Dr. P.G. Shukla's three students - Shri Rishikesh Shrimali, Prof. C. Jagdishan, and Shri V. Ramakrishnan, delivered short speeches paying tributes to Prof. Dr. P.G. Shukla for his life-long dedicated services rendered for the promotion of Sanskrit and Indian culture. On this occasion, Bhavan's students recited 12th and 15th chapters of the Bhagavad-gita, the Vishnu-sahasranama-stotra, and the Rudrashtadhyayi. The members of Shukla Parivara as well as staff-members and students of the Bhavan paid homage to Late Prof. Dr. P. G. Shukla.
