Seminar on Covering the Olympic Games
Students as well as the faculty members and the staff of Bhavan's Ashutosh College of Communication and Mangement, Bhowanipore will always remember October 25, 2016, as a very special day as three eminent sports journalists from three generations presented before them a ringside view of the 'Greatest Show on Earth' at a Seminar entitled 'Covering the Olympic Games'.
Shri Kishore Bhimani, former Sports Editor of the Statesman and eminent cricket Commentator, Shri Rupak Saha, former sports Editor of Ananda Bazar Patrika and Shri Ratan Chakravarty, Senior Sports Correspondent of Ananda Bazar Patrika, narrated different anecdotes from their coverage of the Olympics from Munich in 1972 to Rio in 2016 - spanning a period of 44 years.
Mr. Bhimani's account of the raid and killing of Israeli sportspersons by a terrorist group in Germany's Munich brought out the horror of the incident as well as the fact how he had been able to cover it by the stroke of sheer luck. Mr. Saha advised budding sports journalists to acquire several skills like learning foreign languages, working tirelessly in different time zones and careful selection of events they would cover out of the hundreds on offer on a single day and at venues spread over a wide area.
Mr. Chakravarty said he had to slog at least five kilometres one way everyday to cover one story each day on one Indian sportsperson before travelling 55 kms to cover another Indian medal hope in the just concluded Rio Games.
Shri Saha rued the fact that Indian athletes were much hyped compared to their performance and suffered from lack of consistency. He recounted the discipline of the Chinese by telling the story of a 13-year-old girl gymnast who wanted to have an ice-cream on winning the gold medal. The little one, he said, had been kept under strict diet regime, before she could become the champion.
