Bhavan's Mahila Vibhag, the social arm of Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan, Kochi Kendra, was given a facelift by raising the two buildings and modernising the printing unit recently. The idea of forming Mahila Vibhag was conceived in the year 1984 with
the intention of uplifting underprivileged women. The Greater Cochin Development Authority very much appreciated this cause and allotted 20 cent land on lease at Gandhi Nagar. Bhavan's Mahila Vibhag erected necessary infrastructure to house a note book making unit and tailoring unit and employed poor women from the neighbourhood.
Some of the welfare activities of this unit include:-
* Two health checkup centres which provide free consultation and free medicines for poor and needy people.
* Day care centre and Anganvadi to cater to children of the locality.
* Mid-day meal to students of two Govt. schools at Giri Nagar and Tripunithura.
* Sponsoring one Ambulance, nursing staff for palliative
care unit of District General Hospital, Ernakulam. Distribution of free medicines worth Rs. 50,000/- every month.
* Providing old age pension to 20 old helpless women.
* Providing free food once in a week to old helpless people of the area.
* Providing learning materials to children of the colony.

Since it is a low-lying land, inundation was a regular problem during monsoon which disrupted all the activities. To meet this challenge the buildings were lifted three feet from ground level with the help of modern technology. A new printing machine for the printing unit has also been purchased.
The inauguration of the refurbished buildings and the modernised printing unit was done by CA G Gopinathan, Vice Chairman, Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan Kochi Kendra, CA Sankaranarayanan K, Hon. Secretary cum Treasurer and Shri E Ramankutty, Director on January 20, 2022.
