Lady space walker and U.S. astronaut Sunitha Williams was in Kolkata on April 3, 2013 and shared her experiences in space with a large Kolkata audience. In an interactive session held at the Science City Auditorium, she addressed nearly 2000 students from 20 schools across Kolkata.
BGKV student Srishti Samaddar who was a part of the audience, inquired about how the International Space Station stays protected from asteroids and intergalactic missiles. Williams said that the spacecraft has a lot of protective coating layers that keeps it protected. Another BGKV student Shreyoshi Acharjee asked an interesting and intriguing question: Had Williams felt the presence of God in space? Williams replied that she has seen the Northern Lights from space. She believes that the universe is ruled by immense energy that comes from solar activity.
Sunitha Williams urged the students to engage in space activities by adopting careers in astronomy. The session was an enriching experience for the BGKV students.
