Bhavan's Cultural Festival 2011 which commenced on November 20, 2011 kick-started the popular "Madras Music Season". The Festival was inaugurated by Shri G. Srinivasan, Chairman and Managing Director, United India Insurance Company Limited. Smt. Sucharitha Reddy, wife of Shri Pratap Reddy, Chairman, Apollo Hospitals Group was the Guest of Honour. The 25 days festival concluded on December14, 2011 with 113 programmes of music (vocal & instrumental) dances of India like Bharatanatyam, Kuchipudi, Odissi, Kathakali, Kathak and Literary Discourses.
During the inaugural function, eminent carnatic vocalists Padmavibhusan Awardee Dr. M. Balamuralikrishna and Padmashree Awardee Dr. Nityashree Mahadevan received the Shri P. Obul Reddy and Smt. P. Gnanambal Memorial Awards of 1 lakh each for their contribution to Indian music. The Kendra Cultural Awards were given to five musicians during the function. Shri Srinivasan, who inaugurated the festival said that Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan has been in the forefront of intellectual and cultural movement of the country and paid rich tributes to its founder K. M. Munshi.
Receiving the award, Dr. Balamuralikrishna said that Bhavan is a "home for arts and artists". He congratulated Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan for its yeomen service in the arts and culture field.
